Toyota US President Jim Lentz brings up a good point about car floor mats.  He indicated in an article in USA Today that as many as 15% of people have stacked floor mats.  This is causing a safety hazard.

Lentz is right about the floor mats.  Never stack your floor mats in a car.  The accerator can get stuck between the first and second floor mat.  This could keep you from decelerating properly.  I don’t need to tell you the consequences of such a situation.

People who stack mats are probably trying to do one of two things.

  1. Raise their heel to avoid getting mud or water on their shoes or clothes
  2. Create a more cushioned area for their foot when they drive

Both of these problems can be resolved by other means.

If you need to get your heel elevated to avoid water, consider buying a custom molded floor liner.  The newest floor liners from companies like Nifty Products or WeatherTech have deep grooves to all water to stay trapped below the groove.  Your clothes and shoes will remain dry.

The Nifty Catch-It is shown in the picture on the left.  It is the tan mat on the left.  Note the grooves that will channel water away from your feet.

WeatherTech’s FloorLiners also have this groove system that protects clothes and shoes.  WeatherTech is a bit more expensive, but offers a wider selection of vehicles including truck, cars, SUVs and CUVs.

To get a cushioned feel when they drive, it does not make sense to use two floor mats stacked on top of each other.  This might be an inexpensive, but dangerous solution.  It would be much better to get a heavier carpet mat like the new Nifty Elite molded floor liners.  These floor liners are made with 83% thicker carpet.  The 22 ounce carpet is made of nylon fibers that can be easily cleaned and do not stain.  All of the Nifty Elite Floor Liners have backing that will hold any water, debris or mud that spills on it.  Nifty has introduced Nifty Elite Liners for the following vehicles.
